Detailed material selection and specification is beyond a feasibility study. However, the removal and introduction of materials on site has a profound impact on all topics, so 'as with building methodology ' some consideration must given to the issue.
Where sustainable development is a fundamental aim of the re-development of the building, detailed consideration must be given to the selection of materials which meet the requirements of sustainability, such as using local materials, and 'environmentally-friendly' products (e.g. cast iron or clay pipes instead of PVC). The National Green Specification (GreenSpec) contains some useful pointers on this subject. Fortunately, with regard to material selection, sustainability considerations are often compatible with the sensitive restoration or replacement of the original materials surviving in older buildings.
