11 Building Services
Thinking about systems at the start allows for the most effective integration with structure and compatibility with the physical qualities of the building fabric. Again, the detailed design is beyond a feasibility study, but an initial concept should show that services would work in sympathy with the building rather than against it.

The Client
- Provide performance requirements for heating, lighting etc, including the acceptable limits on performance. If you do not already know how do define your needs, then CIBSE Guides may prove helpful in this regard (e.g. Guide A - Environmental Design).
- Consider requirements for cooling as well as heating. Where this is necessary, preference should be given to passive approaches to cooling, avoiding the energy consumption and some of the disruption to the building fabric associated with air conditioning systems.
