11 Building Services
Thinking about systems at the start allows for the most effective integration with structure and compatibility with the physical qualities of the building fabric. Again, the detailed design is beyond a feasibility study, but an initial concept should show that services would work in sympathy with the building rather than against it.
Consultants
- Consider the impact of services on the building fabric
- including the installation itself (pipe sizes and runs) and the impact of operation (temperature, humidity, moisture movement impacts). Refer to CIBSE's "Guide to Building Services for Historic Buildings (2002)".
- Advise on energy use, maintenance and management requirements, and associated costs
- Consider use of natural ventilation and renewable energy sources
- Consider removability (without disruption to the building fabric) and maintainability.
- Highlight the need for a thermal dynamic analysis, if appropriate
